God Our Helper

God Our Helper

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. (Psalm 46:1

I received a call from a staff worker who asked for counseling regarding their anger, lack of empathy, and remorse for the mother-in-law who was dying. They expressed concern over their guilt and anger and wanted to know if this was wrong for them to feel this way. As I listened, I could sense their pain in the situation and frustration over the ongoing problems they had been facing. Their mother-in-law had taken advantage of them, treating his wife mean, and misusing them financially. Now, she wanted to go away for a special treatment out-of-state to see if she could live longer. He felt she had about 2-4 months to live with her cancer diagnosis. He was seeking some clarification on his emotions and what was going on with him. I shared some insight and he said it was helpful, and that he had a measure of stability for the present.

Anger, frustration, and pain are typical emotions when you are going through difficult times with family members. Guilt wants to play a part in the situation as well.

God wants to be our refuge in times such as these. He is ever present to help us in whatever trouble we face. As a chaplain, we have a responsibility to use active listening and then apply the Word as applicable to help those in need. God will comfort and His Word will speak, giving counsel and comfort to those who are feeling inadequate to make the right decisions.
