Content in all Things

 

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. (Phil 4:12)

It was Ash Wednesday, and the hospital patients were given the opportunity to participate in this tradition. I was greeted by a patient when I walked into a room with the words, “I got my ashes”. I asked the patient what the ashes meant to her. He stopped for a moment and said, I don’t know” I asked him if he gave up anything for Lent. He said he used to drink and smoke cigarettes, and had given up cigarettes, and only drank maybe once every other month. I asked the patient what he really likes to eat. The patient replied, “Salad”. Shortly, a staff member arrived bringing a large tray with three different salads on it. What a sight for someone who loved salad. I guess the patient was sincere in saying he liked salad. As I was leaving, I said, “God bless you”. The man said he was already blessed; they had three sons.

I thought that he was an interesting patient. While sitting in a hospital room, he was satisfied with the small blessings in his life – his sons, three salads, and his hospital participation of Ash Wednesday. It reminds me of how little we need when we belong to God to make us happy. We have much to be grateful for in our lives.
