Christ Suffered for Us

After all, God chose you to suffer as you follow in the footsteps of Christ, who set an example by suffering for you. (1 Peter 2:21 Contemporary English Version)

The middle age man lay there on his bed grief stricken upon hearing the devastating news of his son. His tears flowed as he shared the story of his wheelchair bound son who was shot. Are there words for comfort during a time like this, you wonder? What can you say to take away the pain of losing a son? Comforting as best as I could and saying a prayer; he looked up at me and said, “He understood what Christ went through with his suffering on the cross. He said he could identify with that. Wow! There were no words adequate enough to respond. Yet, as I stood there, I realized his bitterness when he said he wanted revenge for his son’s death. He wanted them to pay for the crime they had committed to his son. He had missed the last call from his son - a recorded message. I offered a prayer for him that he would be like Jesus in his decisions regarding forgiveness to those who wronged Him.

We cannot blame others for our pain. God suffered so much giving up his only Son, Christ in order that we may have forgiveness. If God can bear through so much pain of losing a Son, cannot He help us bear our pain, and forgive? Life will bring suffering, but since Our Savior has endured, he will provide a way of endurance for us.
