GOD MADE THE SUN

Lesson Three (1st Quarter)

To the Teacher: Begin your planning and preparation with prayer. Keep a prayerful heart as you teach these little ones. Think about the wonderful creation in the world we live in and remember to express appreciation for the many things you see as you drive in your car as you travel.

Material needed: Large Yellow Sun for display, yellow construction paper, glue, crayons, snack, napkins, small cups, moving eyes, thin red strip for mouth, and stars stickers for eyes and a cotton ball for a nose.

Schedule & Lesson

Free time (10 minutes) Use this time to check in the toddlers, and be friendly as you greet parents. Their child is the most important, and you want parents to feel comfortable with their child being in your care. Provide toys in good condition, and sanitized for them to play with.

Prayer & Snack Time
(10 minutes) Train them to form the habit of washing their hands. Place all snacks on a paper towel and give them a small amount of drink in a paper cup. Require them to sit at the table to eat. It may take a little time, but they will get used to it. Suggestions: animal crackers, graham crackers, fish crackers the small pretzels, raisins, or dry cereal. You can make a mixture of these items and store together in an airtight container to use for several weeks.

Lesson Time
(5 minutes) "Remember to speak slowly and pause"

God made Mr. Sun. See this big, big sun? It is huge! Mr. Sun is very big, bigger than you and bigger than me. Mr. Sun is far away. The sun is very high in the sky far away. God made Mr. Sun. What color is the sun? The sun is yellow - bright yellow. God made the yellow sun. Feel the sun here (run hands over the large sun) Is it hot or cold? This big sun in the sky is very hot. God made the big sun and it is very hot. Mr. Sun is so hot that he can burn our skin if we sit outside in the sun for too long. That is what we call a sun burn - when your skin gets real red and sometimes hurts.

God gave us the sun to give us light. If we did not have any sun, it would be dark. Do you like the dark? We sleep in the dark. If we turn out the lights on in our room, it will be dark. God gave us the sun to give us light. The sun gives us light so we can see, and it is very hot. Me. Sun helps flowers grow nice and pretty. Do you like flowers?  (Show a picture of flowers).

Review: God made you. God made your fingers. Can you wiggle you fingers? God made your nose. Let's wiggle our nose. God made your hands. Can you shake your hands? God made your eyes. Blink your eyes open and shut - open and shut. God made your feet. We can stomp our feet. God made your ears. Touch your ears - one, two. God made your mouth. Say, "God made me".

God is good and God is kind. He made you! (Point to them). God is in heaven (point up high), and he loves you, (point to them) and He loves me (point to yourself). God loves everyone (spread arms wide). Can you spread your arms real wide to show me how much God loves everyone? He loves you this much (spread arms wide). God knows everything (Point both fingers and tap sides of your head). He knows you (point to them) and he knows me (point to yourself). God made you, and God made me. God made the Mr. Sun, and God is good.

Let's sing "God Made Me" (Sing it several times).

Sun Craft
(10 minutes)

Give each child a large round sun cut from yellow construction paper. Allow them to color and decorate with star stickers and a strip of red paper to make a mouth, moving eyes, and a cotton ball nose. Help them paste the sun to a blue piece of construction paper. Write their names on the paper to send home. Write on the blue construction paper the word "God Made the Sun". Use a white crayon or a black marker. Write this Scripture reference under the verse, Genesis 1:3. Add some sunglasses on Mr. Sun. Preschool craft: Color letter "S" for "Sun", or glue small circles of paper cut using colors yellow, orange, and red to full the letter. Staple or glue to a paperplate. Make a hole punch in one end and tie a peice of yarn to hang over kid's head to take home. Say, letter "S" stands for "Sun" Letter "S" says s-s-s as in "Sun".
