Letter "N" Neighbors

Props/Materials

Snack and art supplies, DVD's for music, Youth to do the puppets. This would be a good Sunday to invite a nurse or someone trained in First Aid to come and show the kids the proper way to do a wrapping on a sprained body part (finger & arm). It will go along with the Message.

Our brothers, sisters, family and neighbors, too,

Help them to grow more like you we pray,

And may we show them your love in a special way, Amen.

"The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'(NIV) Matthew 25:40

Bible Memory Verse
Activity

Begin saying the verse having each child say only one word at a time and add on a word until the verse is completed. Do this several times. For example: Child one says, "The." Child two says "The King." Child three says, "The King will."

Skit

SCENE 1

Preacher: I wonder who that is with that flat tire over there.

Deacon: I don't know. Do you want me to check it out?

Preacher: Do we have time?

Deacon: Well, that game begins at 2:00. It's 1:30 now.

Preacher: We'd better not this time.

Deacon: You're probably right - as always. I need to warm up some before we begin that game. My last game was not good.

Preacher: Someone will come along to help out. The youth group is coming by on their way to King's Island today. They love to do those kinds of things. (Both exit)

SCENE 2

Youth 1: Hey! Look over there.

Youth 2: Someone has a flat tire. Let's go help.

Youth 1: Can you use some help?

Women: You are an answer to prayer. I have been waiting for hours. I did see some church people go by. They seemed in a hurry.

Youth 1: We'll take care of it. No problem.

Women: Thank you so much! I have never changed a tire in my life.

Youth 2: There's always a first time for everything. Glad to be of service to you.

Women: God bless you both. What church do you go to?

Youth 2: Community First.

Women: I want to visit your church. You know some youth your age, would have never stopped by to help an elder lady.

Youth 1: We'd love to have you. Come by this week, and you will see us doing a skit for worship. You may enjoy it.

Women: Really? I'd really like that. I'll be there.

Kid's Message (Based on: Luke 10:30-37)

Who is our neighbor? There once was a man who was traveling down a road that went from Dayton to Middletown.  This was a road that robbers traveled often. These robbers were men who would frighten people, and then take their money. Sometimes, they may even beat them before they left.

One early evening, there was a certain man traveling all alone down this road. Some robbers, who were hiding in the trees, came up to him and demanded his money. Of course, the man did not want to it all away to the robbers so he resisted. This made them angrier and they not only took all his money, but they beat him leaving him all alone on the road. The poor man was in such pain, and the longer he cried for help the weaker he became.

Finally, he heard someone coming along the road. Maybe he would get some help, he thought. He could barely see the man for the bruises on his face and swollen eyes, but it looked like a preacher. There was a church sign on his van. Thankfully, the man cried out to him, but the pastor slowed down. Looked over at him and drove on. You see, the pastor had some other calls to make, and a golf game this afternoon. Someone else would come along he was sure. Right now, he had other important matters to take care of. The man was so disappointed. He surely thought the preacher would stop to help him. He continued to lay there in great pain hoping the next person would help him before he bled to death.

It was not too long when he heard someone coming on a motorcycle. This would be a quick ride to the hospital he thought. Hey, that is Deacon John. To his dismay the deacon looked his way waved, and sped down the road. He seemed in a big hurry. The man felt himself getting weaker and weaker, If he did not get help soon, he felt he would die the pain was unbearable.

Finally, after a couple hours he heard a car coming down the road that sounded like the muffler was out. That sounds like the janitor's car. He stopped, and got out and hurrying over to the man. He took out his First Aid kit and wiped the man's wounds, putting a bandage over them. Then, he gave his some water to drink. Lifting him carefully, he placed him in the back seat of his old car and headed for the hospital.  When he got his to the hospital, some men came out and they rushed him to ER. The janitor told ER that he would pay the bill if the man did not have any insurance. He knew this church member had just lost his job. He then told ER to take good care of him, and call him when they were finished with checking him out. He would see that he got a ride home. Which man was the neighbor?

Discussion Questions

  • 1. Why do you think the janitor was the neighbor?
  • 2. Who is your neighbor?
  • 3. What can you do to show kindness to you neighbor?
  • 4. What does God say about helping our neighbor?
