Bible Memory Verse Activity
1. Cut out fruit (apples; use pink and red hearts if using for Valentine’s Day) and place the verse behind each fruit. Have a few apples that will say one of these things behind them: skip your turn, take an extra turn, LOVE, or say the verse. Place all fruit on the board for all to see. One at a time, allow the kids to select a fruit and do what is written behind the apple. The kids selecting the LOVE fruits will receive a fruit sticker (or heart if using for Valentine’s Day)
Character Story (Use a large Puppet to tell the story)
Venny Valentine was a very unhappy person. She liked to eat chocolate for breakfast, for lunch, and for dinner. When her mother gave her vegetables, she would pout. When her mother gave her meat, she would cry. When her mother gave her chocolate, Venny would light up like a Christmas tree, and eat it all. Venny sure did not know how to eat healthy food that was best for her.
One day, her mother thought she would teach Venny a lesson. For breakfast, she gave her chocolate, for lunch she gave her chocolate, and for dinner she gave her chocolate. Venny ate and ate, and ate chocolate all day. The next day, her mother did the same thing. She gave Venny chocolate all day. This went on for three days until finally Venny said that she wanted cereal for breakfast. Her mother ignored her and gave her chocolate. For lunch, Venny told her mother she wanted a sandwich and chips. Her mother gave her chocolate. For dinner, she told her mother she wanted meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans. Guess what? Her mother gave her chocolate. Venny was getting upset and asked her mother why she was doing this.
Her mother told her that she loved her and wanted her to eat food that was good for her. When Venny complained so much about eating her vegetable like a good girl, she made those around her miserable. So, out of love her mother decided to teach her a lesson. Jenny decided to eat her meat, vegetables and fruits from then on. She did not complain, but thanked her mother that she loved her enough to do what was best for her.
Kid’s Message
How many meanings do you think love has? Lots, and lots, and lots!
Love is an affection that we feel toward others. Love can be directed to someone that we care for. Love can be something that we are devoted to and like to do – like playing soccer. Love is something that boys and girls talk about when they begin having a boyfriend or girlfriend. Love is when a man loves women, and asks her to marry him. Love is patient, love is kind, love is understanding, love is forgiving, love is overlooking a fault in someone else.
God gave his only Son, Jesus, to show us how much that he loved us. In return, He wants our love. He wants us to love others with the same love that he has shown to us. Love is something that we must put on and practice. It is not easy to love some people. It is not easy to love someone who treats you mean. It is not easy to love those who tell lies about you. Yet, this is the kind of love that God gave to us when he sent Jesus to die on the cross for us. That was a great sacrifice, and we are expected to love others unconditionally. That means no matter what they say or do, we will love them. We will forgive them; we will not hold a grudge against them.
God said to put on love which is one of the Fruits of the Spirit. God knows what is best for us like Venny’s mother did in the story earlier. So, if we will obey him and love like he wants us to love others, we will please him and grow into adults that learn how to get along with those around us. Trust God, he knows what is best for us. Put on the Fruit of the Spirit – LOVE.
