What is Your Name?
Christmas Message
Big Idea: Meanings of names have a great importance in our lives.
Bible Verse: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"--which means, "God with us." Matthew 1:23 (NIV)
Materials: Baby book of names
Message: What is your name? Do you know the meaning of your name? My name is Jeanne and it means “God is gracious”. My husband’s name is Larry and his name means “Man from Laurentum”. Our daughter is, Regina. Her name means “Queen or Ruler with Counsel”, and our son, Nathan, means “Gift of God”.
Names have a special place in our lives. Would you like to be called a name that had no meaning at all? Even if we do not know the meaning of our name, we are all special in God’s eyes. He gives us a new name when we give our hearts to Him. We are called “Christian”. Do you know anyone by the name of Christian? The name Christian means “Follower of Christ”. That is something to live up to isn’t it?
Long ago, thousands of years actually, God sent His Son, Jesus to earth as a tiny baby. He wanted to provide a way that we could go to heaven when we die and this was His plan. He would send Jesus to earth as a baby through Mary. Jesus would die on a cross, shedding his blood so that whoever believes on Him might be forgiven from all their sins and go to heaven some day. When Mary was pregnant with Baby Jesus, the angel said that the baby was to be called “Immanuel”. The meaning of the name Immanuel is “God with us”. God is always with us, and He will never leave us nor forsake us. He will be with us whatever our name is or means. It is important that we live up to our name as a Christian. When we belong to Jesus, he will help us live and act the way that will please Him. He places His Spirit within us that enable us to do this. Remember, that God is with us – all the time!
