What to Include in a Safety Policy

A safety policy is imperative for your children’s department and church. It will protect you from unnecessary allegations that can damage your ministry. It will protect your children and youth, as well as your staff members. I have included some ideas that you may want to consider as part of your poiicy.

1.       Staff and Volunteer applications

2.       Criminal background checks required (there are some free sites you may try such as eSorn & National sex offender)

3.       The command through which reporting abuse or suspected abuse will be done

4.       Appropriate manners of touching

5.       First Aid and CPR Training

6.       Picture / Video release forms

7.       Health forms (tetanus, allergies, insurance, hospital release)

8.       Activity Permission Release

9.       Incident Form (time of incident, date, persons witness, what happened)

10.    Policy for conversation and counseling in youth, adults, pastoral, staff, all leaders

11.    Policy providing transportation for children and youth under 18 (example: never to be alone with a child or youth in a car)

12.    Discipline Guidelines

13.    Safety procedures for nursery (cleaning toys, recording diaper changes, food administered, incidents, arrival and leaving)

14.    Signatures from all leaders who have received and read a Church Safety Manuel.

15.    Designated adults for CPR and First Aid for sanctuary.

16.    Training provided for all staff of adults and children to recognize abuse. (Some of our elderly will come from nursing homes or assistant living)
