Who is our Neighbor?
Who is our Neighbor?
Scripture Verse: Galatians 5:14: "Thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself"
Props: First Aid Kit (items enclosed: Band-Aids, wash cloth, alcohol)
God is interested in us being busy for Him. The Bible tells us that God loves us so much that He gave His only Son to die on a cross for us in order that we may be saved from our sins. Once we have confessed our sins and asked Jesus to come into our heart, we are a new creature in Christ. Now we are ready to share this Good News with our neighbor. Who IS our Neighbor?
Once there was a man walking down a rocky road when some robbers came along and took all that he had away from him. They beat him up very badly and left him lying on the roadside to die. He lay there in great pain. He had no one to take him to the hospital and wash his wounds. Finally, along came an important man who looked at him and decided not to stop. He felt he did not know that man and did not want to get involved. So the poor, beaten man lay there in his pain. He tried to call for help and no one was there to hear him. Eventually, another man came along. This man was from another culture and did not like who this man was; he was not about to help him. Finally, along came a poor man who did not have much, but he did love Jesus. He came over quickly and stooped down to help the hurting man cleaning his wounds (take items out of the first aid kit as you talk). He then took him to a hospital and waited while the doctor and nurses checked him to see if he would be ok. This man showed the love of Jesus.
Our neighbor is anyone who is in need of help. It does not matter if they are dirty, poor, rich, ugly, or even smelly. When God saves us, He wants us to be busy sharing and telling others about the love of Jesus. He will give you the ability to do this as you just watch for opportunities to serve Him.
Practical Application: Use drama to allow the children to repeat the story and act it out. Assign the kids parts, and as you read the story again, they act it out. I have found kids really like to be a part of the story in acting it out.
Questions for Discussion:
1. What are some things that we can give to others in the name of Jesus?
2. Who is our neighbor?
3. How was the man on the roadside shown the love of Jesus?
4. What do you think about the important man who did not help?
